Brief History

On January 28, 1977, a group of twenty people met in the home of Kenny and Eleanor Lariscy to discuss the possibility of establishing a church.  Southside Baptist Church was organized January 31, 1977, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Johns.  The first worship service was conducted on Sunday, February 6, 1977.  There were thirty-two people in that service.  The first Sunday school was held on February 20, 1977.  Over the next nine years, Southside met in several different locations from the Boggy Bay Community Center, 301 Lee Avenue, and 500 Hicks Street.

On July 20, 1986, the church moved to 301 Brunel Street where worship was held until May of 2003 when the building was destroyed by fire.  For the next year, services were held at the facilities of Central Baptist Church on Ava Street until the present building was erected at 3439 Knight Avenue.  The first services were held at the present location on December 12, 2004.
